Meet Marty, the Expert Craftsman Behind Good From Wood
Discover how Good From Wood creates custom barn doors and handcrafted wood pieces designed for each unique customer right in Stillwater, MN.
Our Story
Good From Wood began in a garage in Stillwater, Minnesota during the snowy spring of March 2013. Frustrated with the cheap and unattractive bi-fold door on the front closet in his home, Marty decided to build something better — a custom sliding barn door that would add both function and character to the space.
After installing the door, Marty shared photos of the project on social media. What started as a simple home improvement project quickly caught people’s attention, and he started to gain followers. Soon, inquiries started coming in from people who wanted similar custom doors for their own homes.
Since that first project, Marty has created thousands of custom woodworking pieces for customers across the St. Croix Valley and around United States. While he can build just about any type of wood furniture, his sliding barn doors have become the signature piece that customers request the most.
Marty’s passion for woodworking fueled his desire to show his two sons Gus and Maverick the value of building a meaningful business in his local Stillwater community. He enjoys creating projects with them and passing down the beautiful art of woodworking to the next generation of craftsmen.
Over the years, Good From Wood has had the opportunity to collaborate with numerous interior designers and home design professionals throughout the United States. One of Marty’s custom barn doors was featured on an episode of the Most Embarrassing Room in America on HGTV in October 2013, where it was used as a pantry door in a kitchen makeover. That same kitchen was also featured in the October 2013 issue of HGTV Magazine.
Marty appeared on an episode of House Hunters in 2016, showcasing the growing popularity of custom barn doors in modern homes. Marty also completed several custom projects for Family Handyman, an international home improvement brand, where his work was featured in their magazine, website, and streaming TV channel.
Today, Good From Wood continues to design and build handcrafted barn doors and custom woodworking projects that bring warmth, character, and craftsmanship into homes. Every piece is built with care and attention to detail, helping homeowners create spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
What We Build
At Good From Wood, we specialize in building custom barn doors, but we can also create a wide variety of other handcrafted wood projects designed to add character, function, and craftsmanship to homes. Every project is built with attention to detail and tailored to the needs of each customer.
Our most popular pieces are sliding barn doors used for pantries, closets, offices, and room dividers. These doors combine rustic charm with modern functionality and have become a signature feature in many homes. In addition to barn doors, we also build a range of custom woodworking pieces including fireplace mantels, nightstands, writing desks, and Adirondack chairs.
Over the years we’ve also created many smaller custom projects that make great additions to kitchens and living spaces. From handcrafted cutting boards to fun pieces like taco holders, we enjoy building items that bring personality and practicality into everyday life.

About Our Barn Doors
Our barn doors are built with durability, beauty, and craftsmanship in mind. Each door is constructed using locally sourced pine wood unless another material is requested. For exterior doors, we typically use cedar because of its natural resistance to moisture and outdoor conditions.
Every door is built to order, allowing customers to customize elements like size, panel style, stain color, and hardware. This ensures that each door fits the space perfectly and complements the design of the home.
From the initial concept to the finished piece, most barn doors take 6–8 weeks to complete. Once finished, we can personally deliver doors locally or ship them safely to customers anywhere in the United States.
